Laser Vision Correction
Most people with vision correction issues are wanting to know more about LASIK and whether it is right for them. Here is a brief description of the procedure; A flap is surgically cut in the cornea and gently folded back. An Excimer Laser is used to reshape the cornea into a flatter shape (this is much like a contact lens corrects vision by forming a new shape on the cornea). The flap is then put back in place, acting like a natural bandage. The healing process is quick and the discomfort level is quite low. People will often say that they did not feel anything, and could see well the very first day. Most people have improved vision in 24-48 hours, but it must be noted that each person will heal at a different rate. Vision, although greatly improved immediately after surgery, often continues to improve for some weeks, even months. LASIK is not for everyone. People's eyes are different so even though you may have had a friend who has had LASIK, it may not be the best course of treatment for you. If you are interested in laser vision correction, we will be happy to guide you in picking the right surgeon, procedure and laser appropriate for you. After the procedure, our unsurpassed post-op care involves monitoring your eyes and adjust your medication for the best possible results.
Childhood Eye Turn Muscle Surgery
There are several different factors that can contribute to why a child's eye will turn in, out or not align properly with the other eye. In some cases an eye turn can be corrected with glasses alone, but that is not always the case. If an eye turn, also known as strabismus, can not be corrected with glasses then surgery may be indicated. Our doctors will work with each individual case and if surgery is indicated will refer the child to a specialist who performs this type of surgery.
Cataract Surgery
A cataract is a clouding of the natural lens. The natural lens is inside the eye just behind the pupil. In the early stages of cataract development we may be able to improve vision with only a change in the glasses. Eventually the lens may become so cloudy that vision can not be improved until it is removed. Cataract surgery has benefited greatly from advances in technology and as a result is an outpatient procedure with typically very little discomfort. At Academy Eye Centers we work with co-managing surgeons that perform state-of-the-art cataract surgery and also work with our doctors so in most cases you can return to our doctors for your follow-up care.
Glaucoma Surgery
Glaucoma is a disease of the optic nerve which can lead to a loss of peripheral vision. There are several different types of glaucoma and the management of the disease depends on the type of glaucoma and amount of damage. Glaucoma can be managed by eye drops that lower the intraocular pressure but in some cases more aggressive treatment is indicated or various surgical interventions may be a better alternative. Our doctors work with each individual case and if can refer patients to a glaucoma specialist as needed for surgical intervention.
Macular Degeneration
The treatment of wet macular degeneration has changed dramatically over the last few years due to the use of various injectable medications which can dramatically reduce the risk of progressive vision loss and in some cases even improve vision. There are also laser therapies that can be used to treat macular degeneration. Our doctors work with co-managing retinal specialist who can determine the best treatment course for each individual case.
Diabetic Laser Surgery
Diabetic eye disease is the leading cause of blindness in working age Americans. Good blood sugar control is the best way to reduce the risk of blindness but in cases of advancing retinal disease, laser treatment may be indicated to slow down the progression of the disease. If referral for further treatment is indicated our doctors will refer to a retinal specialist.
