Maria B. Smith, O.D.
Dr. Smith was born and raised in Lucama, NC, a small farming community in Eastern North Carolina. After graduation from Hunt High School she attended North Carolina State University where she received a bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences. She then attended optometry school at Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, TN and received her Doctor of Optometry degree in 2003. Upon graduation from optometry school she moved to Washington State where she completed a residency in ocular disease and surgery co-management at the Walla Walla VA Medical Center. Washington State was so much fun that she decided to stay and completed a 2 year fellowship with Pacific Cataract and Laser Institute. A strong love for family and North Carolina called her back east, at which point she accepted a position in private practice in Northeast Georgia. Knowing NC was where she truly wanted to be, she started with Academy Eye Center in December of 2007. Dr. Smith is grateful for the opportunity to serve others through her daily work and through mission work.
She currently resides in Greensboro and plans to marry in June 2008. Dr. Smith and her fiancé Dan, enjoy doing just about anything outdoors, especially if they can include their dogs, Cassie and Lucky!
